Anti Bullying Mini Seminar @ Sims Park -May/2011
Master Lima was invited to run a Mini Seminar at Sims Park in Port Richey on May 21st, 2011 for kids from ages 5 and up.
“I’m very happy to have a chance to help and inform some local kids how to prevent and what to do in case a bully approaches and bother them.
I wish we could do this on monthly basis to our community, especially to kids that can’t come to our school for any reason ….and I’m sure we would be able to help some of them .
Bullying is something that is getting bigger and bigger everyday and it is a dangerous thing. If a child is bullied in school for years and no one knows about it, the emotional damage caused by that is worst than the physical one. Just read the news: kids committing suicide, overdosing, having social skills problems, etc…the list goes on.
I always explain to my students ways to avoid the confrontation, but I also teach them how to defend themselves if the situation happens.
Even though my main Martial Art is Taekwondo, I teach them basic Grappling techniques, so that way they are ready to defend themselves standing up or on the ground.
That’s the difference between us and some other schools. We are always evolving and learning. There’s the Sport Taekwondo, the Taekwondo as a Martial Art and there’s the Street Self Defense, which some call “The Real Deal”.
That’s why I say to all the parents, Martial Arts isn’t only a Physical Activity, it is a Lifetime Investment for your child, it will increase their Confidence, Self Esteem, Self Control and for sure they will be ready to Defend Themselves!.” -Master Lima

The Fighter’s Mind
Lately I have been reading a lot about Mixed Martial Arts, especially books from high profile coaches and trainers, and one of the books I have been reading “The Fighter’s Mind” had some lines that I really liked and I’d like to share to those that love Martial Arts in general. Enjoy it!
“I don’t think I was the best fighter, but I can be the best teacher. Because I really care about the guys (students), all my guys. I care what happens.”-Ricardo Liborio
“(for teachers/coaches)…basically the best thing you can do is love and show unconditional interest-it is the only real way to connect to students. As a student, you can feel even if you never put your name to it.”-unknown
“I never bother getting angry. I don’t need it. I don’t confuse angry with intense. I think being angry makes you tired. I perform better at high level without it.”- Marcelo Garcia
“Maturity is a big part of success in fighting, because it means you understand the game-that losing is part of the game. It doesn’t mean you let yourself get conquered, but to know that you can win again, at the right time you can be great. The key to doing well in competition is to accept. Accept you can lose, you can not perform. Take this big bag of rocks out of your backpack, take the pressure off, and you’ll do better. Once you understand that, man, you can do well.” -Ricardo Liborio

Family
The topic of this month in our school is :Family.
As most of you know, I just became a father last July of this beautiful girl :Olivia. Also two years ago I became a stepfather of Dylan and Madi, which is amazing how much love they give me, respect and accept me and a “second dad”.
Becoming a father changed my view of family and life, since now I’m a provider and I have a big responsibility for the rest of my life. This month is also important for me because my mother is coming from Brazil to meet for the first time my little girl, Madi and Dylan and she will finally stop asking me when I’m gonna give her a grandchild
(my siblings gave her 4 already!).
Every month we talk about a different topic in our schools, and personally I think this one is the core of everything, let’s say, a lot of things we do outside is a reflection of what we learned in our home from our Family members.
A Family can be made up of many different people. Mostly, it’s a mom, dad, and siblings. It can be parents who adopt us, or often, our grandparents raise us. Sometimes our parents live in different homes.
What matters most is that you understand your Family is the most important part of your life. They’re more important than everything you have, including your friends.
I’m very thankful of what my Family taught me in my childhood, even though we didn’t have my father with us since I was 4 years old, my mother did both “tasks” very well, she worked inside and outside of that house, raised 3 kids on her own, with no high school diploma, no car and the closest family was one hour away from us. So for me my mother is my “True Master”, she made something good out of nothing and I’m very proud of her.
My sister and brother taught me values that until this day I thank them for it. They taught me how to work hard to get things (even though we didn’t have much), to be honest and live everyday like it’s your last, always giving your best.
So, show your family their importance by spending time with them, and never forget where you come from!!

Martial Arts and ADD/ADHD Children
“Childhood ADHD — attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder — is diagnosed after a child has shown six or more specific symptoms of inactivity and/or hyperactivity on a regular basis for more than six months in more than two settings. There is no single test for ADHD.”
Hi everyone!
We hear more and more on daily basis about ADD/ADHD kids, and how everyone is doing their “own treatment” to their kids, and the most common, or should I say “easier” way for some people is to give kids medications, or the pills.
I personally don’t believe in pills, since back on my time when I was a kid, we never heard the ADD/ADHD terms and our parents’ treatments where way different than the actual ones. (It’s sad nowadays parents lost their power to discipline, since now the schools teach the kids to call the cops on their own parents)
Of course there are some cases, where no one can help the situation, but in most cases I believe that parents could work on some things to help kids to be more focused and under control, such as:
-Enroll your child in a Martial Arts Program, where instructors are constantly working on Self Control, Focus and Discipline,
-Keep a daily routine at home,
-Give your child one task at a time,
-While doing home work, getting dressed or eating dinner, turn TV and radio off, so there will be NO distractions,
-Focus is one of the things that ADD/ADHD kids need the most, and it is a taught task, so make sure your work on it on daily basis.
-Games such as puzzles, books with Q&A at the end will definitely help.
If this post can help at least ONE child I will be very happy!
Master Lima
